The Elector Counts of Marienburg, also sometimes called the Elector Counts of Westerland or Baron of Westerland, were the rulers of Marienburg. How this noble line acquired a Runefang is unknown, but its possession strongly implies that they were Elector Counts of their own right.

History

The Elector Counts of Westerland originally ruled only the ancestral homeland of the Endals, around Marienburg. However, in 501, Emperor Sigismund II conquered Jutonsryk, the land of the Jutones, to the north of Marienburg, added it to Westerland.[2], and made their king the Baron of Westerland.[3]

In 1109, Norscans raided Westerland. Snorri Half-hand took Marienburg and declared himself Jarl of Vestland. However, the de jure Baron was able to hold out on Rijker's Isle, in Marienburg. Prompted by the outbreak of the Black Plague in 1110, the Norse left in 1111.[3]

In 1979 IC, during the Age of Three Emperors, those Electors who still participated in the imperial elections chose the underage Countess Magritta of Marienburg as elected Empress. Many (probably most) of the Electors had been bribed by wealthy Marienburg merchants[1]

The Grand Theogonist refused to acknowledge the election; his refusal de facto ended the line of elected Emperors.

Supported by Marienburg merchants, the Countess later advanced her claim for the imperial throne. Her claim was later passed on to her heirs, who were counted among the main candidates for the imperial throne besides the Reikland pretenders, the Wolf Emperors and the Ottilian Emperors.

Paulus van der Maacht, the last Elector Count died during the Great War Against Chaos in 2302. Three years later, Emperor Magnus the Pious changed Westerland from a barony to a province, meaning it was governed by a council of burghers rather than an Elector Count.[3]

In 2429, the burgomeisters of Marienburg bribed Dieter IV in exchange for the independence of the Wasteland. The Elector Count of Nordland currently holds the title of Prince of Marienburg but is forbidden to even enter the city upon pain of death.

Notes

  • The identity of the runefang is a mystery. It is sometimes speculated that it is the runefang now in the hands of the Elector Count of Nordland.
