Troll Country

The Troll Country is a great shadowy wasteland located north of Kislev and the Lynsk river, and south of the Chaos Wastes.

It is in fact the outermost of the realms of Chaos, the furthest part of the world touched by the Shadow of Chaos. It is a vast plain dotted with hills, dead trees and fissures. All manner of beasts, natural and unnatural, roam and kill and consume anything they can catch.

To the north it is mainly tundra, with a grassy steppe in the south broken up by only a few hills and forests. The rocky coastline and salt marshes are known as the Bile Lands. [3a]

Inhabitants

The human population of the Troll Country is overwhelmingly Ungol and mostly nomadic [2a] travelling with game herds and avoiding the more dangerous fauna. [3a]

Troll Country is home to many creatures of Chaos, including Chimeras, Minotaurs, Ogres, Beastmen, and as its name suggests, Trolls. These Trolls are far more dangerous than their southern kindred, and are afflicted with horrifying mutations.

The natural animals that roam the land have not escaped mutation [3a], and wolves, bears and other creatures are hunted by the beastmasters of Clan Moulder, who search for suitably vicious beasts to bring back to Hell Pit. The land also contains a large number of Greenskin tribes.

When the tide of Chaos rises in the times of the Chaos Incursions, the land serves as the gathering place for the armies of Chaos, before they launch their invasion across the Lynsk into Kislev.

Kislev regularly sends patrols into this region to slay as many creatures as they can in an attempt to keep the monster head count down to a manageable level. Here on such a patrol, the great Tzar Boris Ursus was killed.[1]

Troll Slayers often venture here, either on their own or accompaning travellers and traders. [3a]

Locations

  • Bay of Blades: Named for the many sharks that inhabit its waters with shrines to Mermedus and Neiglen it is sacred to both the Sarl and Skaeling. Here they settle disputes. [3a]
  • Bile Lands: Made up of salt marshes, stony beaches and craggy clifs, it is home to Stone Trolls and River Trolls. Although loners, communal Bile Pools are created where Trolls purge their stomachs - these are especially dangerous in the winter when they freeze over and become hidden. [3a]
    • Chamon Dharek: A great grave mound, sacred to the Kurgan and strong with tainted power. It is surrounded by mummified horses and holds a vast hord of cursed treasure in gold and gems. [2a][3a]
    • Tobol Delta: A huge salt marsh fed by the slow Tobol river. [3a]
      • Grim: Also known as Orange Keep, it is a walled compund and staging post for Slayers heading into Troll Country. [3a]
      • Pradeshynya: Port-town dominated by the Ungols and in the winter its population is boosted by encamped nomadic tribes. [3a]
  • Hell Pit: Lcoated at the very northern edge of Troll Country, it is the home of the Skaven Clan Moulder.
  • Leblya: One of the largest settlements in the Troll Country, it is often designated as a mustering or fall-back point for the Kislev pulk which means that anyone raised in the Troll Country knows how to get there. The small town is built around an old Scythian mound. [2a]
  • Rose Ruins: Remnants of an unknown race whose smashed statues defy being resembled into a familiar shape. Creeping, thorned roses cover the site. [3a]
  • Sarl Coast: The Sarl dominate the north and north-western coastline, the northern beaches often have semi-precious stones washed up on them. [3a]
    • Altar of the Crimson Harvest: A Sarl fortress-port shared with Skaeling where slaves are traded and a sacificial alter to Khorne sees much use. [3a]
    • Kalti Delta: Another huge salt marsh that merges with an inland fresh water marsh - a domain of many River Trolls. [3a]
  • Throgg's Lair: Home of the Troll King, it is said to lie somewhere in the north-east of Troll Country. [3a]
  • Zamak Spayenya: A once sacred great white rock, a league or more across with a flat top, rising from the steppe. Its sides are very steep, making it a useful temporary redoubt or local Ungol Tribesmen. [2a]
