The Battle of Montfort was a battle between the forces of the Empire and Bretonnia. [1a]
Tristan le Troubadour recieved a vision from the Lady of the Lake who told him of Sir Artrenic of Fandramanc who had sold his loyalty to the neighbouring Sigmarite Empire. Artrenic had certain documents that could be used to cause division amongst the noble houses of Bretonnia and weaken the realm for years to come. The blessed lady directed Tristan to find Artrenic near to the town of Montfort, where its Duke of Montfort would be forced to muster his men to repel an attack by the Imperial general Magnus Von Abresicht. [1a]
The reason that Von Abresicht attacked into Bretonnia and the fortress-town of Montfort is unknown. He had hired many mercenary companies and raised numerous milita regiments but after his army was defeated the Imperial Court did not disclose any knowledge of his motivations. [1b]
The journey through Axe Bite Pass was difficult and took a heavy toll on the artillery trail. [1b]
Battle
Von Abresicht was killed early in the battle by a misfiring cannon. [1b]
The Empire had deployed its remaining artillery atop a shallow hill and by the time Tristan arrived they were pounding the bretonnians whilst knights on both sides dueled in the centre. At the same time huntsmen and free companies engaged yeomen and peasents on the flanks. Tristan gathered a dozen other Questing Knights and led them to try and reach Sir Artrenic, battling hard throughout the day. [1a]
The battle continued throughout the day and by the time dusk fell, thousands had died. It was at this point that the Duke of Parravon arrived with his own army, forcing the Imperial army to yield the field and retreat to Axe Bite Pass. [1a]
Around 6000 people died on the field. [1b]
