The Chaos Wastes are two great wastelands which surround the north and south poles of the Warhammer World. Their creation stemmed from the collapse of the Polar Warp Gates causing the uncrontrolled entry of Chaos matter into the world. The term 'Chaos Wastes' is most often applied to the northern wastes, the southern wastes being largely unexplored by Games Workshop in the background material.

The northern Wastes are the home of a great many of Chaos' mortal servants, having land access from most of the major land-masses of the Warhammer World. Perhaps it is due to this that every notable Chaos invasion has come from the northern Wastes. Indeed it is entirely possible that the southern Wastes do not support any mortal life: The only knowledge we have of the inhabitants of the southern Wastes are the words "Here be Daemons" that appear on the world map in the 7th Edition Warhammer rulebook.
