Free Spirits are warrior Sylvaneth whose unquestioning obedience to Alarielle makes them important agents of the goddess in her fight to reclaim her lands in the Mortal Realms. [1a]

Kurnoth Hunters

Kurnoth Hunters are a type of Sylvaneth in the Mortal Realms that are the living embodiments of the wrath of the hunter god Kurnoth, one of the few deities the sylvaneth worship alongside Alarielle herself. These are the most elite of the warriors of the sylvaneth wargroves, they are swift, strong and equally skilled with Greatbows, Greatswords and Scythes. In combat they are devastating, wielding their powerful weapons, accompanied by vicious Spites called Quiverlings and able to sprout a thick weave of thorned branches to enhance their already thick bark-skin.[1c][2a]

They take the form of hulking warriors nearly twice the size of a Dryad but only emerged from the Soul-Pod groves when Alarielle took up the Spear of Kurnoth. Although they are masters of sword, bow and scythe, they also are strong enough to tear a Chaos Warrior in two and are tough enough to shrug off even dragon-fire. The Kurnoth Hunters are agile and skillful fighters with a grace that seems almost supernatural in beings so large and powerful. [1c]

Kurnoth Hunters travel in small bands, ranging ahead of Alarielle's Wargroves. Some arcane sorcery of their mother lends speed and subtlety to their movements, allowing them to pass undetected through all but the most heavily guarded terrain. Then, they watch the enemy's movements with infinite patience before choosing the perfect moment to strike. When they fight, the Kurnoth Hunters show none of the capricious whimsy of some of their kin. [1c]

They always have a purpose, a mission, and a carefully considered method. Calm as an ancient oak, certain as the seasons turn, the Kurnoth Hunters lure their victims into traps and strike swiftly from ambushes. They're not only exceptional scouts, but also serve as the Everqueen's executioners. Should an enemy war leader be deemed too dangerous to live, or some perpetrator of great misery against the sylvaneth be found, the Kurnoth Hunters have their queen's dispensation to call the Wild Hunt.[1a] At such times, all sylvaneth are compelled to lend their strength to the Hunters' quest and will not rest until their prey has been cornered and slain.[1c]

Though taciturn and strange, even by sylvaneth standards, the Kurnoth Hunters are deeply focused beings through whom the Spirit Song reverberates in full force. They venerate their living goddess and devote themselves utterly to her will. They also give praise to their soulfather, the Hunter God Kurnoth, and dedicate those slain in battle as sacrifices upon his altar. Across the Mortal Realms, many sylvaneth observe rites to minor deities and demigods of cycles and seasons, but their overt worship of another deity leads some to mistrust the Kurnoth Hunters. Alarielle vouches for her most warlike sons, and this is enough for most, but there are still those who watch the newcomers warily, despite all their great victories against the forces of Chaos.[1c]

One of the most controversial aspects of the arrival of the Hunters is the appointment of Royal Huntmaster of Kurnoth to the Royal Moot, the rulers of the sylvaneth. This post has not been given to a single hunter, but rather a different individual attends each time as the Huntmaster. Some amongst the Noble Spirits are suspicious of them, especially the Keeper of Dreadwood who continually grumbles that no-one should be more trusted by their mother than her regents, hwoever others welcome them and even claim that the Royal Huntmaster is an avatar of Kurnoth himself.[1c]

The Heartwood Glade in particular has welcomed the hunters and continue to hold them in the highest regard, drawing inspiration from them in battle [1e] although many hunters are seen in the ranks of Harvestboon Glade wargroves.[1d] Kurnoth Hunters have been involved in many battles and wars, both in the Realm of Ghyran and beyond - they spearheaded a Wild Hunt to cleanse the Mistwoods of Shae-Rahat from the Great Unclean One Gruxulok and his followers. A hundred Hunters scaled Mount Anvil to liberate the Realmgate atop it from the Skaven of Clan Feesik [1f]

Spirit of Durthu

A Spirit of Durthu.

The Spirits of Durthu are powerful sylvaneth can be found either fighting alone as embodiment of Alarielle's will, or as a group as the fabled Sons of Durthu. With their every deed they strive to be worthy of the legacy of legendary Durthu, and this determination makes them some of the most powerful warriors in the sylvaneth Wargroves. Unlike most sylvaneth, the Spirits of Durthu belong to no clan or glade, instead they answering directly to the Everqueen and when she sends them to battle they stand in defence of her chosen commanders. [2b]

In appearance they resemble Treelords, but have distinctive flickering energies that dance about their guardian sword and within their body. Filled with lore and wisdom, they are ideal advisors to their divine creator and favoured spirits such as the Sons speak with her authority when she is not present.[1b]

Sons of Durthu

Alarielle's personal bodyguard and agents, bonded to each other on a level that resembles a shared consciousness and would even kill friends or fellow sylvaneth to protect their queen. However despite their devotion, they have stirred their queen to anger and even rage on occasion.[1b] Twelve of the Sons were sent into the Ulgulands to seek a powerful weapon but following several great battles, all contact with them was lost, but hope has not been lost that they may retain with their prize.[1f]

During the Age of Chaos, shortly before she retreated to Athelwyrd she was so enraged by them that she banished them not only from her presence but from her lands - although they were devestated they obeyed and scattered across the Mortal Realms.[1f] When she was reborn at the beginning of the Age of Sigmar her first action was to summon them back.[1b]

With every orruk he crushed, smashed or sliced apart, Dollenhal reflected upon the fact, though none knew what had become of their ancestor, every Spirit of Durthu held themselves accountable to his judgement. They would not be found wanting.

~Dollenhal at the battle of Lifewell Clearing .[1a]
