A Chaos War Mammoth

Mammoths are huge creatures that can still be found in the north. Rarely they are found in a circus or other shows in the Old World and are also raised to carry warriors into battle by the Norse. [1a]

Ecology

Mammoths roam in herds across snowy tundras in the north, sweeping with their tusks to expose short grasses and shrubs to eat. As they grow they consume large quantities of food, which are often tainted by Chaos. As a result, the herds often become mutated and aggressive, developing mutations such as horns and extra tusks and attacking anything that catches their attention. A single individual can level a village in a fit of territorial rage, and a herd can destroy an entire tribe. [3a]

Habitat and distribution

Mammoths roamed the colder world that existed before the Old Ones moved the planet closer to the sun, warming it. [1a] In the modern day, most mammoths roam the snowy wastes of the northern lands, ranging from the shore of the Sea of Claws to the slopes of distant K'dathi. [4a] They can also be found in the cold lands of Naggaroth and were hunted for meat when the Dark Elves first arrived. [2a]

Most of those that stray south are luckily rogues, as a whole herd is a devastating force. [3a]

In war

Northern tribes consider mammoths to be sacred creatures, as they view them as embodiments of might who go where they wish and destroy what they will. While mammoths cannot truly be tamed, some tribes use sorcery to bind the creatures to their will; [4a] others seek out calves abandoned by their mothers and train them to become near unstoppable weapons of war. [3a] The Dolgan tribes are the most experienced at breaking mammoths to their will, and jealously guard the methods by which they do so. The Norscans and Hung are also known to harness these creatures. [4a]

Harnessed mammoths become formidable war beasts and symbols of fear. They are often mounted with fortified platforms carrying the strongest warriors of the tribe. Others are taken as mounts by their shaman-sorcerers, and carry great shrines to the Chaos Gods for all the battlefield to see. [4a]
