Mercenary Crossbowmen are professional missile troops, usually from the Border Princes, Estalia and Tilea. [1a]
Tileans are renowned for their skill with a crossbow and although their land is often wartorn, during periods of peace, many Tileans head north seeking employment - quickly finding it in the retinues of Bretonnian lords or those of the Empire. Those that join the state armies of the Empire are often equipped from their arsenals. [4a]
History
Marius of the Jutones employed mercenary crossbowmen and pikemen to defend his city against Sigmar at the Siege of Jutonsryk. [3a] They would prove to be vital in preventing the retreat turning into a rout following the Battle of the Northern Ridge [3b] and also helped defend Middenheim from the forces of Chaos at the first Siege of Middenheim. [3c]
