The '''Empire Mortar''' is part of the [[Empire Army List]]. They are shorter and heavier than [[Great Cannons]] and are designed to lob a shell to fall upon the target rather than directly firing at it. The shell is hollow and full of gunpowder and the crew light the fuse before loading the mortar. While a cannon may rip through ranks and kill three or four warriors, an exploding mortar shell can spray mud and pieces of shell over a large area, shredding many victims at once.

A Mortar with three crewmen

Mortars are one of the artillery pieces created by the Imperial Gunnery School. It is more squat than a Great Cannon, and instead of solid iron balls it fires hollow shells filled with black-powder and with a fuse attached. If the shell is on target it will explode in the heart of an enemy formation, blasting red hot shrapnel in all directions. However, sometimes the fuse will go out before the shot is fired, meaning that the crew will have to waste time removing the dud shell. In a worst case scenario the fuse will be too short - causing the Mortar to explode and killing the crew.
