Plague Toad

Plague Toads are Daemons of Nurgle which naturally dwell in a great lagoon at the heart of his garden. [1a] They are also known as the sewer-kin or rot-eaters. [2a]

Appearence

Plague Toads resemble toad-like bags of filth and pus, with mouths large enough to swallow a human whole. [2a] They have a slimy horn on their heads, and prehensile tongues capable of pulling prey into their maws. [1a]

Ecology

Some say that Plague Toads are Plaguebearers that failed to tally correctly [1a]. Others claim that they are Nurglings grown to huge bloated size. [1a][2a]

Plague Toads live in a large lagoon at the heart of Nurgle's realm, where they wallow in the diseased water. When Nurgle's wars against his brothers turn foul and his mood turns foul, he waddles down to the lake and squashes the toads until the blood and pleasing patterns restores his good humour. The loud damp squelch that a toad makes when trod on alerts other toads, who seek bolt holes to escape Grandfather's sight and foot. [1a]

As a result of the danger of their home, Plague Toads take any possible opportunity to escape to the mortal world. There, they typically dwell in sewers, swamps or other noisesome locations, although any water source will do at need.[1a][2a] There, they prey on unwary passers-by and drawing sustenance from befoulment.[2a]

In warfare

Followers of Nurgle often bind Plague Toads to their will, as they can be lured by the prospect of feasting on uncorrupted flesh. [2a]

Some Plaguebearers, known as Pox Riders, capture and use Plague Toads as reluctant mounts forming the vanguard of Daemon armies. [2b]

Quotes

Words simply cannot express the full horror of the beast. Its pustulent hide was distressing enough to behold, but the smell? It was less an odour than a malefic spirit in its own right. I don't believe I shall ever be free of it.

~ High Elf Prince Yvrec of Lothern.[1a]
