The Sword of Khaine, also known as Widowmaker or as Godslayer, is a sword that contains terrible power, capable of killing a god with but a touch. It lusts for blood and whispers to all that approach its shrine, promising them the chance to become all-powerful in exchange for enough blood to sate its thirst. However, the blade has such a lust that fulfilling it is impossible. It is kept in a shrine dedicated to Khaine on a far-flung island, known as the blighted Isles, that is currently under control of the High Elves. However, this does not stop the Dark Elves from attempting to capture the island, and there are many bloody battles fought near the shrine. Aenarion, the first king of the High Elves, used the blade to repulse a Chaos invasion and was slain in so doing. Aenarion's descendants, the twins Tyrion and Teclis, are tainted by the blade's curse.

The sword appears to take on different forms to the personal preferences to the viewer, for example it was a sword for Aenarion the Defender, however it was a sceptre for Malekith and a lance for Caledor the Conqueror. The weapon changes form to represent how it would be used by its wielder, it was a sceptre for Malekith when he was tempted to draw it during the reign of Bel Shanaar as it represented his would-be peaceful rule over Ulthuan and the other Princes.

The blade is the physical manifestation of murder and violence.
