(Fun - 'Fluff' - Sample Fluffied Army list - Tactics for the Army)

Line 1: Line 1:
After several years of playing Warhammer Fantasy, mostly with Dark Elves, Chaos, Dogs of War and Empire, I've learnt one thing - I'm never right. Never. Except when I'm right. Well, enough of that, I'll just begin a few things about how to have fun in the game, what the rewards of playing a themed, or fluffy, as some call it, army.

1 - Have fun in the game. In other words, don't take entire armies of Tzeentch Knights and Dragons, or have Empire Armies with 2 Cannons, 2 Mortars and 2 Helblasters and then 1000 Hand Gunners. It get's boring for your opponent, facing something he has trouble beating that hits like a ton of bricks to the chin, play differently.

So instead of 6 Warmachines and 5 units of 10 Handgunners, have something like 2 units of 20 Swordsmen with 4 5 men Hand Gunner Detachments, a single Cannon, a single Mortar, and maybe a unit of 20 Greatswords to be a centre unit. You'll find that generally, you and your opponent will start having real fun, instead of you just rolling a ton of dice and blowing entire units of the table, you'll see close combat, face tactical difficulties, and perhaps learn something worth it, rather than 'if only I had one more Hand Gunner unit and a Priest I would of won that game.' That would turn into something like 'Now if I had moved that unit instead of this unit, I might of been better off, or maybe even having just stayed where I was, get charged and then flank my opponents' unit.'

You see? Nothing like a good tactical mind.

2 - Themes and fluff can make your list dramatically different, instead of having five Cannons and three Helblasters in your Big Guns Always Win army, it becomes an Army from Talabheim, with plenty of Halberdiers to flank and large units of Spearmen to take charges and things.

One theme I have running with my Dark Elf army is an Exiled Shade army, each Dark Elf forsaking their ties to Khaine and serving Sigmar instead, and protecting the Empire. I must say that it's very interesting game with this list.

Another theme for my Chaos Warband is that it's led by a Marauder Cheiftan, in the Tribe of the Wolf. The Tribe of the Wolf believe that dying in combat is the only way to immortallity, and those who cannot die feel shamed, so it is, that their leader, the Marauder Cheiftan Varakh Fang, has been Strengthed by the Gods, but he sees it as a curse, and in Game Terms, Gaze of the Gods and Shield on an Exalted Champion is nasty, nearly unstoppable. The Tribe of the Wolf also have few materials, so basic weapons like axes and pickaxes are common, same as small shields and straps of toughened leather, but seeing a suit of metal is rare amoung them, so Chaos Warriors are rare. Any Warhounds are starved creatures, so savage that they charge towards the enemy, heedless of their own lives, and there are few horses, so most of their Cavalry is in one unit, a large unit with Spears and Shields, a ruined banner with the heads of many a slain opponent hanging from it.

My Empire and Dogs of War themes are still to be found, but the Empire are from Middenland, protecting their homes with little technology and fighting with the traditional weapons, such as spears, swords, shields and halberds. Dogs of War are very tricky... but I will find a theme for them, in a few months when I've played a few more games.

Now, on to tactical, of course, this is all from my own experiances, so if someone else has an experiance that's different with a unit that's the same, please, don't hesitate to say so.

Okay, Varakh Fang, as stated, is cursed to live, so a 2+ and 4+ Armour and Ward save is pretty protective against all but perhaps a Strength 7 Hit. Even that's going to hurt Varakh Fang the Marauder Cheiftan.

The Kult... now, while a Shield isn't very Khornate, he is a berzerker, crazy, unable to find someone able to kill him, in battle he is a whirlwind of death, seeking the being powerful enough to kill him, so far no one has been successful, and he's miffed about it, one reason for the Mark of Khorne, the other is that when he was a child he accidently drunk from a well full of Warpstone and a few years after that his skin grew an innormal resistance for Magic. So, Mark of Khorne gives him not only his berzerker style, but his Resistance to Magic, good, huh? I was going to give him two hand weapons, but the idea of a ball on chain spinning so fast that it acts as a shield is too cool an idea to ignore! :-)

The Feared Riders. Okay. They're not the Apolopsye (I could use some Spelling help for that, please - Thanks) Four like a unit of Chaos Knights of Khorne with Full Command and Chosen, but they do their job, Strength 4 on Charge and great Flankers, with, on average, 11 attacks against a ranked up unit, they not only rock, but they're lightly armour, as per Fluff for the Clan of the Wolf, but they are also going to be 1 out of 2 (yes, 1 out of 2) horse backed units in 3000 Points, the other being a unit with Throwing Axes and Musicain.

The two large Marauder blocks are there for 1; To give numbers and 2; Because heavily armoured units are rare, Marauders are the only things in the Chaos Army which can be killed relatively easily. They're also great models.

The War Hounds have their usual job, of being shields for the Marauder Riders and the foot sloggers, as well as being perhaps the hungriest of doggies in the world. They're mad. I might swap them for Flesh Hounds like Kult, having drunk from a Warpstone pool to gain a Magical Resistance and a crazed mind. And no, these do not count as hoseback, or mounted units, they're doggies. And I've learnt to hate them when my friend plays a few units of Dire Wolves...

The small units of Marauders. These were ment to be large units, but in end the remaining points only allowed 23 of them, so, 13 with Great Weapons and 10 with Flails. The reason for these small number and their names is plague, they were once fighting a Nurgle army and contracted a nasty disease and started dying out, therefore they were given equipment so as to redeem themselves, and were left to fight their enemies like that. They also make excellent flankers (you could say they're Maraudiple small units... boy am I going to get it for that one! :-) )

Over all - The tactics I use for this Army are simple. Exalted of Khorne goes on his own to route out Skirmishers and Scouts, the Exalted of Undivided just goes around kill Fast Cavalry, and they do their jobs well. The 2 large Marauder blocks make a solid centre, while the smaller units on their flanks serve as flank protectors and flankers themselves, the Doggies and horsies go on one flank and roll through the enemy flank one by one, being unstoppable killing machines. Sounds easy, right? It isn't, my dear newbies, it's very hard to execute with great precision. Just try your best and 'roll' with it.
