King Thutep, one of the kings of the third dynasty of Nehekhara, was the predecessor to his brother Nagash. [1]

Although his features were not as regal as his father or younger brother, he had an easy charm and an expressive face. [2a]

History

His mother was Sofer. [2a]

He took the throne after their father Khetep [1] died fighting against Zandri.[2a]

When he took the throne he recieved embassies from the other city states of Nehekhara and a bride, Neferem from Lahmia, following the tradition began by Settra and Hatsushepra to maintain the Covenant with the Gods. Zandri also returned all prisoners they had taken and presented three Druchii slaves to tend the dead kings spirit. [2a]

Thutep and Neferem were ritually married in the River Vitae in -1968 IC as his father and mother were laid to rest in the vast tomb that Khetep had built. [2b]

His son Sukhet was born in -1964 but his power was already slipping away as Zandri became more prominent. A plague also claimed the lives of many in Khemri including those who held powerful positions at court, those few remaining nobles who took their place were secretly part of the cabal formed by Nagash. [2c]

Nagash, the Grand Hierophant of Mortuary Cult of Khemri[2a] at that time, ploted against Thutep's life, with the intention of taking the throne for himself. In -1959 IC, having been alerted about his brother, Thutep, accompanied by his Ushabti and Hapshur, High Priestess of Neru confronted him and attempted to arrest him for trial. Nagash slaughtered Hapshur with his magic and ordered his minions including Arkhan to attack the king. Many of the nobles plotters died on the blades of the blessed but eventually they were all overcome, Thutep's last act was to tell his wife's handmaiden who had been captured for sacrifice to flee. His mind was then overpowered by his brothers magic and he was taken to be sealed into the crypt in the Great Pyramid of his father. [2d]

The next morning, Nagash proclaimed himself High Priest and King of Khemri, positions never occupied before or since by a single person.[1]
