This page holds an timeline of the Warhammer World. Please note that this is an abridged timeline. It lists only major events in history, and does not go into great detail. For more information visit the individual timeline pages for each race (forthcoming), or the various pages on historical events.
For the sake of simplicity, dates here are given using the Imperial Calendar only. However, there are other calendars in use by other races. Each kindred of Elves has their own calendar, as do the Dwarfs. Approximate dates will be preceded by the circa (c.) symbol.
What to include on this timeline:
- Major Battles which had a major impact on history. In particular, battles which have their own articles on this wiki.
- The start and end of large wars such as the Great War Against Chaos.
- The deaths and births of the most important characters. People such as Nagash, Malekith and Sigmar for instance.
- The creation and destruction of various races, nations and factions.
- The coronation and deaths of the Phoenix Kings.
- Other very important events that have shaped the history of the world.
What not to include:
- Information about minor characters (who didn't do anything very noteworthy) which do not have their own articles. Leaders of factions, such as the Dwarf High Kings, are accepted.
- Information about battles which did not alter the course of history.
For the sake of readability, this timeline has been divided into four unofficial Eras.

? | The Ancient Past Most of the Warhammer World is gripped by an ice age. Dragons rule the skies. Primeval creatures such as Shaggoths, Stonehorns and Stegadons prowl the land. |
[1] |
c. –15000 | The Dawn of Creation The Old Ones travel across the stars on silver ships and arrive in the Warhammer World, settling in Lustria. The Old Ones create the first spawnings of Slann, Saurus, Skinks and Kroxigor. |
[2][3] |
c. –10000 | The other spawnings of Slann are created. Itza is founded as the first Temple-City of the Lizardmen. Other Temple-Cities follow thereafter with some in The Southlands, such as Zlatlan. The world's orbit is shifted, ending the ice age, and the continents are split up, creating the Great Ocean. Elves are created and placed on the island continent Ulthuan. Afterwards, dwarfs, humans and halflings are created. Try as they might, legions of Saurus are unable to completely wipe out the Greenskins. The Old Ones create Warpgates above the poles in order to travel between worlds. |
[4][5] |
c. –5700 | The Ogres are created by the Old Ones to help stop the spread of Chaos. | [6] |
c. –5600 | The Coming of Chaos / The Great Catastrophe The Warp Gates collapse, causing the Coming of Chaos. The Old Ones mysteriously vanish. At the poles, permanent rifts open to the Realm of Chaos, creating the Chaos Wastes. Chaos energy (raw magic) and warpstone flood into the world, mutating humans and animals into Skaven and Beastmen. During this time many primitive human tribes begin to worship the Chaos Gods. Led by Be'lakor, armies of Chaos Daemons march across the world, assaulting the Lizardmen, Elves, Dwarfs and others. The Lord of Change Kairos Fateweaver brings about the downfall of Xahutec. Huatl, Tlanxla and many other cities fall. Despite the efforts of Kroq-Gar, Xhotl falls. Soon all the first-generation Slann are slain save for Lord Kroak. |
[7] |
c. –5600 to c. 0 | The Time of the Beast The Beastmen remember this period as a golden age when Beastmen were supreme and the primitive humans were prey. |
[8] |
c. –5500 | Time of the Ancestor Gods Led by the Ancestor Gods, the Dwarfs migrate north, colonizing the World's Edge Mountains and creating the Karaz Ankor. Some go further north into Norsca and polar regions, others head east to the Dark Lands and Mountains of Mourn. |
[9] |
c. –5000 | Lustria Besieged Under assault by daemonic legions, the forces of the Lizardmen are pushed back to Lustria. The Slann cast a great spell, turning the jungles of Lustria into a deathtrap of carnivorous plants and venomous creatures. Xlanhuapec is shrouded with mist, to protect sacred artifacts of the Old Ones. |
[10][11] |
