Volkmar, Grand Theogonist of the cult of Sigmar.

Volkmar the Grim has been Grand Theogonist of Sigmar for more than an average man's lifetime. He is constantly under siege from chaotic forces of the Norsemen as well as the constant meddling of Vampire Counts from Slyvania. But sadly, the old man also has to deal with internal affairs from his own clergy.

Volkmar rides to battle on a grand chariot bearing the sacred icon of the Empire, the Griffon. As well as being a powerful spellcaster, Volkmar knows the ways of the sword just as well as any other Empire knight, but he employs his spells foremost.

During the Storm of Chaos campaign, Volkmar was considered to be doomed from the start by participating players. His clergy was in constant conflict over an enigmatic young battle priest named Luthor Huss. From the start of the campaign, Luthor claimed to have found the reincarnation of the exalted Sigmar, a young blacksmith's boy named Valten. Most of the clergy wanted Luthor excommunicated and even declared a heretic. Volkmar refused to listen to the internal squabbles because he was weathering a much larger problem, the coronation of the Everchosen, Archaon, Lord of the End Times.

Storm of Chaos

Volkmar decided the time was right to move against the oncoming army of Archaon. The Empire's army met the forces of Chaos on the snowy battlefield of Kislev. The fighting ebbed back and forth but Volkmar soon realized that the unending stream of reinforcements would prove fatal to his army. In a rash move Volkmar charged, shouting a challenge to Archaon. Volkmar knew the Chaos Warlord could not refuse for fear of showing weakness before his warband. The fates were against Volkmar: Archaon slayed the head of the Sigmarite Church with one stroke.

A year passed. Be'lakor, the Dark Master had been released from his prison. Eventually the daemon chanced upon the same Kislevite battlefield where Archaon had triumphed. There he discovered Volkmar's frozen corpse, the ruins of the Jade Griffon amulet nearby. Be'lakor hit upon a plan. The daemon laid a taloned hand over the dead man's open chest. Using his most truly powerful magics, Be'lakor reached into the aethyr and pulled the dead man's soul back into his body. The process is thought to have regenerated Volkmar to his prime: Be'lakor needed him not only alive but healthy so as to prolong his torture. Be'lakor ordered Volkmar raised and chained firmly to his army standard, the spectacle of his suffering intended to crush the resolve of the Empire's defenders. By so doing, the daemon would also upstage his rival, Archaon: while he had merely slain Volkmar, Be'lakor meant to subject him to a lifetime of physical and mental torture.

Directly before the Siege of Middenheim, Volkmar broke free of his enchanted bonds and was rescued by King Louen Leoncoeur of Bretonnia, who carried the priest to the shelter of Middenheim's Shallyan temple. On the final battle of the campaign, Volkmar was avenged: Be'lakor and his entire army of daemons were banished by Teclis. After the siege many clergymen - particularly the new Grand Theogonist - expressed concern over the return of the supposedly High Priest. He was later accepted back by the church but did not regain his title.

Volkmar has returned from beyond the grave to a time of upheaval and anarchy. Later the increasingly sinister reign of Johann Esmer was ended by the Arch Lectors, who forced Esmer to leave office and go to Marienburg into exile. Volkmar the Grim regained his title and the Sigmarite Church has returned to a certain amount of internal harmony.
