The Chaos Dwarfs are ultimately led by the 'Daemonsmiths', a position that combines the role of sorcerer, priest of Hashut and master engineer. [1a]

These sorcerers are powerful magic users, but are inflicted with a curse of petrification which slowly turns their flesh into blackened stone. The oldest sorcerers are now just immobile statues, their mighty minds trapped inside forever. [1a]

History

When their Dwarf ancestors stood on the brink of death in the Time of Woe, it was a group of sorcerers who saved them, in time raising the great city of Zharr-Naggrund. As their civilisation grew, they created many and varied works of dark engineering and darker magic, raising huge obsideon and black iron towers. [1a]

After a Sorcerer Lord was assassinated by a Wood Elf in the Temple of Hashut itself, the Chaos Dwarfs declared that they would never forgive or forget the insult. Discovering that his home was the forests near the headwaters of the Skull River every hundred years on the anniversary of the murder, they dispatch an army to burn the forests and kill any elves that challenge them. In 2497 IC, General Vraznak led an unusually large force to enact vengeance leading to the Battle of Skull River. [4a]

Society

This group, led by the most senior of the number, are the masters of the Chaos Dwarf empire and dictate to the warriors and crafts-dwarfs below them, who in turn are masters of the multitude of slaves who by number alone make up by far the majority of life in the empire. Only a few hundred are active any any one time but they rule the Chaos Dwarfs with each having their own domain, forges, strongholds, soliders and slaves tos erve them. [1a]

The oldest amongst them invariably have the most power as, like their western cousins, the Chaos Dwarfs have a deep respect for age and knowledge. [1a]

Quotes

Fools all. They known nothing of our great work, of what we have accomplished. Our kin will never progress while they continue to look to a meaningless past for guidance. The old Dwarf empires all fell - doesn't that seem like a significant sign of their weakness? Their adherence to 'tradition' will be their downfall.

~ Vikram Flametongue, Chaos Dwarf Sorcerer. [3]
