Flesh Hound.

Flesh Hounds of Khorne are the Daemonic Hounds of Khorne. [7a]

They are the terrible hunting beasts which Khorne unleashes upon those who have earned his wrathful displeasure, relentlessly pursuing their prey to the ends of the world with [9] Bloodletters often running and leaping in their wake to claim part of their spoils. Once a foe has been caught and slaughtered, they return to the throne room were they knaw on the bones and wait for the next hunt. [10a]

Appearance

They are both Wolf-like and reptilian with heavy jaws and razor-sharp teeth that can shred armour. Their hide is scaly with iron plates in the shape of the skull throne of Khorne hammered into them. All wear a brass circlet that protects them from the magic of their enemies. [7a] Many of them have brands, bone fetishes, brass chains and iron plates - each one granted for the felling of a hated foe or mighty warrior with the oldest having many dozens of such trophies. [10a]

Names

Their Dark Tongue name is Kha'a'a Khak'hyshk. They are also known as Beasts of Khorne, Blood Trackers, Flesh-Renders, Hounds of Wrath, Hunters of Blood, Inevitable Ones [2][7a][10a]

Notable

Physiology

In physique, they are described as eight feet long from nose to tail, possessing a lean, wiry frame with an arched back. They are covered in blood red scales whilst around their neck is a collar of spines connected by an orange-red membrane and rows of iron plates are driven into the flesh along their backs, held in place by brazen rivets in the shape of Khorne's rune.

Their eyes are milky white, their mouths are filled with huge fangs, and their two-toed feet end in razor sharp claws of iron. In addition, all of these daemons possess a collar of Khorne, a spiked collar composed of interlinked iron and bronze sections.[2]

They can easily keep pace with a racing horse over open ground. [8a]

Quotes

In the distance I beheld a Lord of Change, wings torn and limbs bloody. Twas then the heat haze cleared to reveal the Flesh Hound pack loping at his heels. Iridescent fire blazed from the Feathered Lord's open mouth and washed over his pursuers, but the collars about the hound's nexk's glowed dully and the flames died. Last strength spent, the Lord of Change fell to his knees. With one mind, the pack lunged, and soon their prey was naught but torn offal and bloodied plumage.

Notes

Despite the initial usage as one word, the common usage after Slaves to Darkness is "Flesh Hound".

Description

The description presented above is taken from Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness[2]. The description in Warhammer Armies: Chaos (4th Edition) is more succinct, describing them as huge daemonic hounds with heavy jawed heads which are both reptilian and canine. Their hide is described as tough and ruddy, their claws dark and bloody, and the collar of Khorne is described simply as a brass collar.[5] The description in Realm of Chaos is similar but somewhat more abbreviated.

The description in Warhammer Armies: Hordes of Chaos (6th Edition) is also abbreviated but includes the conflicting detail that the collars are iron.[6] The description in Warhammer Armies: Daemons of Chaos (7th Edition) is similar to the description included in Slaves to Darkness and elaborates on that description with images of hounds waiting at the foot of Khorne's throne for the next call to battle.[7a]

Gaming references

In addition to additional special rules for leaping and poisonous attacks, in Slaves to Darkness Flesh Hounds required a handler to prevent mindless attacks against the nearest unit. Subsequent volumes dropped all of the original special rules except for varying degrees of magic resistance granted by the collar of Khorne. Warhammer Armies: Hordes of Chaos (6th Edition) introduced other additional special rules but those rules were dropped in Warhammer Armies: Daemons of Chaos (7th Edition).[7a]
