Knights of the Coldfire
The Knights of the Coldfire, also known as the Coldfire Knights [2b] is a Knightly Order of the Empire. [1a]
An obscure and secretive Order who answer only to the Emperor and eliminate threats to him. [1a]
The name refers to the fact that members of the order must be as destructive as fire but also survey the world with a cold and calculating eye. [2b] They have little regard for witchfinders and zealots. [2c]
History
It was founded in 2429 IC by Emperor Wilhelm III and was comprised of nobles who had been outraged by his predecessor Dieter IV and helped depose him in favour of Wilhelm. [2b]
Emperor Karl-Franz has been reluctant to use them. [1a]

Organisation
The Order sends out small teams of operatives which are rarely composed simply of knights but rather a full fledged knight leads a small group of stewards. Stewards swear oaths of loyalty to the Emperor first and their masters second and are often treated with grim authority by the knights which can become simple abuse and mockery. [2c]
Those stewards who prove themselves in exceptional ways are made Companions of the Order and can wear a version of the knightly insignia but are still not considered equals. Very occassionally a companion can be elevated to the status of knight. In the early 2500s IC there was only one living example, Helmut Beschluss who had won this honour. [2c]
Most knights of the Oder are younger children who are unlikely to inherit, however although they can retire or die in service, they are not able to quit and those that try will be persued by former colleagues. [2d]
