The Proving Ground is a sacred space within the Chaos Wastes. [1]

Champions of the Dark Gods come here to make offerings to their deities in the hope of gaining gifts on their path to Daemonhood. [1]

History

Long ago, four great champions of the Chaos Powers fought a battle to see which of their masters were the strongest - yet none could fully triumph over the others and all succumbed to their wounds. Their followers all raised up great monoliths to their gods which still stand, even if the names of fallen champions have faded from memory. [1]

Chaos Monoliths

Four very different creations, each proclaiming their worship of a specific god stand in the corner of the battlefield. The ancient totems have the power to bestow gifts of the followers of their gods.[1]

  • The Death Stone: Sacred to Khorne, it is a huge menhir, covered in skins and daubed with the symbol of the Blood God. Skulls and skeletal remains are piled high around it and any followers of Khorne coming near can be driven into a blood frenzy. [1]
  • Obsidian Monolith: A huge octagonal prism of black volcanic glass it collects mystical energy to boost sorcerers, especially those who follow Tzeentch. [1]
  • Plague Pillar: A heap of rotting remains and festering remains with gibbering, wallowing Nurglings and which is fed on by bloated maggots and bubonic rats. Those who do not follow Nurgle are distracted by the swarms of flies. [1]
  • Totem of Living Flesh: A writhing column of flesh with mewling mouths opening and moaning in the sickly white skin. Those who do not follow Slaanesh can be intoxicated by the musk it exudes. The column was created from the flesh of the entourage of the ancient champion who were granted their wish to be forever joined in orgiastic union. [1]

Quotes

And I saw before me the place of slaughter, a barren field where no tree or other plant grew, where no waters ran nothing that was not born of evil walked. At each corner of this blighted plain stood a monument raised to one of the dark gods of Chaos. These monoliths and totems were as dark and twisted as those they had been raised to edify.
