Warhammer - The Old World - Lexicanum:Disambiguation and Other Use
This article will briefly explain when and how to use Disambiguation pages, as well as Ambig, Disambig, and Other Use templates.
Purpose of these tools
When multiple subjects share similar names it can be frustrating for users to find the correct article they're searching for. If a user is trying to read about The Empire, for example, but his search for "Empire" directs him to the book Empire (Novel) instead, neither his nor Lexicanum's best interests are served. To correct this we have helpful tools available.
Other Use template
Use the Other Use template for subjects that have precisely two pages with similar names.
This article is about the {{{USE}}}; for the {{{OTHERUSE}}}, consult [[{{{OTHERPAGE}}}]]. |
It allows you to:
- concisely clarify the exact subject of this article,
- identify the other subject,
- directly link to that page.
To use it, copy the template's wikicode to the top of the page. Then fill out the three fields USE, OTHERUSE, and OTHERPAGE.
{{Other Use |USE= |OTHERUSE= |OTHERPAGE= }}
As an example, if you used this wikitext on the page Spider:
- USE is the subject of the specific article you put this template on, like species of arachnid, with no formatting or links.
- OTHERUSE is the other option, like Spiders book series, with no formatting or links.
- OTHERPAGE is the exact title of the page for OTHERUSE, like Spiders (Series) with no formatting or links. It becomes an internal link automatically.
Be certain to edit the other page with the Other Use template as well, basically using the exact opposite text and link as the first time.
Disambiguation Pages
When an article's subject could refer to three or more possible pages it must also have a disambiguation page. This serves as a central location to list all similar articles, link them, and briefly describe each.
To make the page, first create an article with the title "Subject (Disambiguation)". Copy the Disambig template's code to the top, and at the bottom add Category:Disambiguation. Then type in the exact article titles and a description of each entry, ensuring they are properly linked.
Last, copy the code from Template:Ambig to the top of each of those articles.
This article is about the {{{subject}}}. For other uses of {{{term}}}, see [[{{{disambiguation}}}]]. |
Similar to the Other Use template, this allows you to:
- concisely clarify the exact subject of this article,
- identify the vague term,
- link to the disambiguation page.
{{Ambig |subject= |term= |disambiguation= }}
As an example, if you used this wikitext on the page "Owl":
- subject is the subject of the specific article you put this template on, like kind of bird, with no formatting or links.
- term is the title which might have multiple meanings, like Owl.
- disambiguation is the exact title of the disambiguation page for subject, like Owl (Disambiguation), with no formatting or links. It becomes an internal link automatically.
