Castles, Fortresses and other fortifications are used to defend important areas, settlements and provide a strong base for the military.[1]

Watchtowers are small fortified buildings that are garrisoned to ensure advance warning against potential threats.[2]

Constructions

They are made from a wide variety of materials from iron to sun baked cow dung. Most have at least some elements in common such as palisades, ramparts, walls and towers.[1]

Features

  • Arrow Slits: These provide missile armed troops the ability to fire at the enemy in relative safety.[1]
  • Gates: They vary greatly but are normally wide and tall enough to allow a cart or wagon within the fortification. Well protected gates will include a portcullis that can limit access and allow archers to fire through it at the enemy.[1]

Materials

  • Metal: Most such structures are found in the Chaos Wastes as without powerful magic they are extremely difficult to create.[1]
  • Stone: A tough but heavy material favoured for fortifications, it requires considerable time, effort and money to create.[1]
  • Straw: Easily woven together they can made quite thick walls which can resist arrows, bolts and even war machines. They remain extremely vulnerable to fire however.[1]
  • Wattle and Daub: Hay or straw which is mixed with (often smelly) mud and then made into blocks or spread over a framework. Large, cheap fortifications can be created but they stink especially on hot days and like straw are vulnerable to fire.[1]
  • Wood: Sharpened stakes thrust into the ground are often used to form a stockade but remain vulnerable to fire.[1]
