Background
During the End Times the Glottkin were pronounced champions of Nurgle by Archaon. They gathered a huge force and boarded the fleet of Gutrot Spume and crossed the Sea of Claws to invade the empire, defeating a High Elf Fleet that attempted to prevent them.[1a]
The armada split into three with the Glotkin moving to target the free port city of Marienburg. The Marienburg merchant fleet and its formidable harbour defences attempted to stall the approaching fleet but could made little impact of the plague hulks. Magic was used destroy the city's impressive sea wall and plague catapults devastated the Marienburg defenders and their mercenary auxiliaries. As the Nurgle forces advanced, the city rapidly becomes infested with a slimy, moss type substance.[1a]
The battle only really began when the invaders met the forces of the city's 'Master of Shadows, Mundvard the Cruel, a powerful vampire lord who had been building up forces in the city's poor, dock district secretly for many years.[1a]
Stages of Battle
Undead
- Mundvard summons the hidden caches of undead warriors he has hidden around the city over the years. They attack the Chaos force vanguard while the Suiddock beast prevents reinforcements from their Plague Ships reaching them.
- Mundvard starts slaying the northerners piecemeal.
- The Glottkin attack Mundvard. They beat him in combat and using the immense strength of brother Ghurk physically cast him from the city, way out to sea.
- Without their general and animating force the majority of the undead army collapses in seconds. Only a few vampires and the Suiddock Beast escape.
Imperial
- An Imperial army arrives at the city. The form up outside, waiting for the foe to come to them.
- Imperial general Aldred van Carroburg is challenged by and slays a champion in single combat. The champion's death signals the start of the battle.
- The discipline of the Imperial troops manages to hold the Chaos force at bay. Victory seems a possibility.
- The Imperial line collapses when they begin to loose their footing due to the plague-slime spreading across the city. The Imperial troops are butchered.
Aftermath
The total destruction of both the Imperial and Undead armies gave the Glottkin the freedom to begin a campaign of destruction across the Empire which culminated in the Siege of Altdorf. One of the few survivors of the battles was Mundvard who joined Vlad von Carstein some months later at the defense of Altdorf to take revenge on the Glottkin for destroying what he perceived as his city.
