Warhammer: The Old World was released in January 2024. It was presented as a "new game" rather than a direct continuation of Warhammer Fantasy Battle, but perpetuates the trademark rank-and-flank gameplay of its predecessor with an updated ruleset.[6]

Development

In development since 2019, the project aimed to balance innovation with tradition, ensuring a recognizable yet evolved experience for long-time fans. It retains familiar elements to evoke nostalgia while introducing fresh mechanics, miniatures, and narrative framing.[6]

The development involved extensive work revisiting old designs, restoring classic miniatures, and modernizing aspects like basing sizes, heraldry, and sculpting techniques. Some rare and previously unreleased models have been rediscovered and will be made available.[6]

Setting

Warhammer: The Old World is set in 2276, a few decades before the Great War Against Chaos, and 300 years before the previous version of the game' setting. It explores the period before the eventual apocalypse which will destroy the World, focusing on key events like the destruction of Praag and the Siege of Kislev, which marked Chaos’ resurgence.[5]

The setting builds on existing lore but introduces some new elements, with factions like the Skaven largely absent due to internal conflicts, and the Vampire Counts weakened after the Von Carstein defeat. Key returning characters include Settra the Imperishable and the Green Knight, while others are yet to be introduced. The game offers opportunities to develop new heroes and expand the lore.[5]

Technological differences are minimal, though the game highlights how certain technologies were more prevalent at this time (e.g., Steam Tanks being more common and not yet mythical relics). Magic is different too, as the Colleges of Magic don’t exist yet.[5]

Factions

Nine factions from previous editions of Warhammer Fantasy Battles are scheduled to return for the new edition: Empire of Man, Dwarfen Mountain Holds, Kingdom of Bretonnia, Wood Elf Realms, High Elf Realms, Orcs & Goblins Tribes, Warriors of Chaos, Beastmen Brayherds and Tomb Kings of Khemri.[1] These nine 'core factions' will be fully supported within the new ruleset, with each receiving a full release. This will include a new army book in the form of an Arcane Journal, the re-releases of previously out of production miniatures, with some miniatures remastered in Forge World resin [2], and a limited number of new miniatures.

Seven 'legacy' factions would not be returning for the new edition, these being the Dark Elves, Skaven, Vampire Counts, Daemons of Chaos, Ogre Kingdoms, Lizardmen and Chaos Dwarfs.[3] Whilst not officially supported in the new edition, each of these factions was provided with rules at the launch of the Warhammer: The Old World in the form of 'Grand Army' legacy lists published by Games Workshop as freely available pdfs.[4]
