Mathlann, Lord of the Deeps, known as the King of Storm and Sea, is a God in the Elven pantheon. [1]
Mathlann is the ruler of the ocean and all those creatures who dwell under the waves. He has little love for those living on dry land, including the Elves.[3] He is largely seen as a fickle and destructive deity and as a result, he is distrusted and shunned by the majority of Elves.[2b]
Appearance
History
One belief about Mathlann is that he is the son of Ellinill, one of only a few of Ellinill's offspring (the Ellinilli) to survive after Loec tricked Ellinill into consuming the the other hundred or so. This means he is brother to Hukon, Addaioth, Estreuth and Drakira, all of whom are in hiding in the mortal world.[2a]. Others say that he is merely one aspect or guise of Ellinill, who has more than one-hundred faces. [3].
Cult of Mathlann
The High Elf sailors of Cothique and Lothern (such as members of Lothern Sea Guard, crews of Hawkships and Lothern Skycutters), whose livelihood and safety depends on the ocean, worship him openly and venerate him far more than Kurnous or Asuryan.[1][5] The cruel Black Ark Corsairs of the Dark Elves also revere Mathlann. This is partly due to common sense and self-preservation, and partly due to a feeling of kinship with Mathlann. Like the Lord of the Sea, they too are unpredictable forces of destruction. [2b][5]
