Fragonnarde de Montecannes
Baron Fragonnarde de Montecannes was a Bretonnian Paladin. [1a]
History
The last of his line, no longer a young man and with no male heir, he decided to set out on the Grail Quest. He wed his daughter to the bravest of his Knights Errant and who was invested both as a Knight of the Realm and seignior of the fief of Montecannes. Fragonnarde took only a modest retinue, leaving the majority of his men at arms to serve his successor. [1a]
Over the next few years, he travelled across the realm and began to despair of successding his quest. As he was riding into Estalia he encountered a travelling wizard and soothsayer who (for a gold piece) told him that the Grail would be found in the land of Bretonnia, but yet not in the Kingdom. Deeply perplexed, the Baron made camp and considered the riddle and after much thought realised that Athel Loren was within Bretonnia but not a part of the kingdom. [1a]
The Baron led his men back to the forbidden Forest of Loren, his retinue sharing his renewed enthusiam and confidence. They trekked past the waystones that marked the boundary and were soon deep in the forest itself. [1a] They were observed by the Wood Elves who tried a number of times to subtly guide them back out of the forest but as soon as he returned to the open heath he would turn back into the forest. Still, they assumed he would merely go round and round until he died. [1b]
Fragonnarde however began receiving visions and dreams from the Lady and to the watching Elves horror began aproaching a sacred place, so now they determined to ambush and slay the interloppers. [1b]
His shield was one of those found hung on the sacred tree of the Wood Elves of Athel Loren by Agravain de Beau Quest. [1a]
