Dargo Grindolsson
Dargo Grindolsson of Clan Roedtfjell was a Dwarf Engineer of Karaz-a-Karak who invented the Steam Engine. [1a]
History
In the 8th century IC, he was maker of toys for the children of both his hold and the nobility of the Empire. However, after listening to a kettle whistling one day he began to consider if he could use the power of steam to make things move! [1a]
Dargo created a boiler that could spin when the steam was pushed through nozzle and was able to make complex moving toys such as a Dwarf headsman beheading a Goblin and a carousel of Griffons. [1a]
When Karak Azgal fell, Dargo turned his inventiveness to making steam engines that could aid his people such as hammers, drills and even a mechanical steam-powered miner! The Guild Elders were less than impressed when he began to produce drawings for a troop carrying steam-powered tunnel-borer and a flying machine. Luckily for Dargo, the High King was a supporter, overruling the Council and ordering Drago to proceed with his ideas. [1b]
Although not all ideas were successful, his ideas were spread to the other holds in the Karaz Ankor and beyond by Royal Decree [1b] despite Drago wanting them to remain only within his own hold. [1c]
Shamed and angered, Drago shaved his head and took up the path of the Slayer, setting off for Troll Country. [1c]
Inventions
- Steam Engine [1a]
- Earth Borer: A gigantic steel drill on a heavy cannon carriage with a steam engine to turn the drill, although it had to be wheeled into position to begin work. Overheating was an issue, with several Dawi dying working on early models. Later, other engineers improved on the design to make it self-propelled and armoured, especially given the likelihood of encountering the Skaven and other enemies. The modern version, the War Borer is able to carry a dozen armoured warriors and can drop explosives to collapse the tunnels behind them when they withdraw. [1c]
