Kadrin Redmane
Kadrin Redmane was a Dwarf Runelord who reclaimed part of the mines of Karak Varn. [3][4]
History
He fought at the Battle of Three Towers during the War of the Beard where he caught the eye of an ancient Runesmith who took him as an apprentice and taught him how to forge the Dwarf Runes. Eventually his skills even surpassed his teacher and he became the Runelord of Karak Varn.[3]
When the hold was shattered by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes in the Time of Woes he and the few survivors sought refuge in Karaz-a-Karak. He taught the Dwarfs of that hold his Runeskills and forged the Shield of Stone and made several expeditions back to his lost home to try and recover artefacts and heirlooms, discovering that rich veins of Gromril had been opened up by the devastation. [3]
It has been claimed that Kadrin Redmane was the first Hammerer. In -1245 IC Kadrin was a master craftsman at Gunbad when High King Morgrim Blackbeard was visiting a gold mine to bolster the morale of the workers following numerous Goblin raids. A horde of Night Goblins attacked and Kadrin reacted first as the warriors guarding the king were overwhelmed. He charged the invaders, swiftly joined by many other smiths in the forge saving the king who later rewarded him with a Rune Hammer and since that day Hammerers have guarded Dwarf kings. [5][6]
In -1185 IC Redmane petitioned the High King to lead an army to the lost hold of Karak Varn, he was granted permission and cleared it of Skaven allowing mining to start again there. This began what was known as the Great Gromril Rush as hundreds of miners flocked to the old hold and its mines. As the mines began to dry up, he decided return to Karaz-a-Karak with one final ore convoy. [1][2][3][4]
Kadrin was ambushed and killed by Orcs at the Battle of Black Water Pass, also known as the Battle of Black Mound[4] in -1136 IC [2] whilst taking the last shipment of ore to the High King. He flung his runehammer into the depths of the lake to prevent it being taken by the greenskins and since then many expeditions have sought to recover it. [1] [3][4]
When the Dwarfs returned to reclaim the body they found thirty six dead Orcs lying around him. The body was returned to Karaz-a-Karak where he was laid to rest in a vault beneath the Great Hall. [3]
One of his descendants is Durgrim Redmane [3] who confirmed the story for Professor Frederich Weirde. [4]
