Malekith the Witch King

Malekith, also known as Malerion [11a][Note1], is the undisputed lord and master of the Dark Elves. Formerly praised and honoured as the Great, today he is cursed and feared as the Witch King.

History

Malekith is the son of the legendary Phoenix King Aenarion the Defender and his second wife Morathi. He was born in -4458 IC during the the Coming of Chaos and raised in the fortress of Anlec in Nagarythe, northern Ulthuan. Many believe that his childhood traumatised him, as his father's court was a bitter and savage place. Blood sports, hunting and duels were common in the dangerous court of the Phoenix King with many of the finest warriors gathered there to fight the Daemons that plagued the lands. His mother taught him diplomacy, statecraft and sorcery and his father the arts of war and how to lead and command warriors in battle.[6a][12a]

Remember that you are the son of Aenarion. Remember that you are the son of Morathi. In you blood flows the greatest strength of this isle. You are warrior born. You shall be fell with blade and bow, and you shall wield armies as lesser elves wield their swords.

~ Morathi and Aenarion to Malekith.[3a]

His father perished at the conclusion of the Daemon Invasion, after the Battle of the Isle of the Dead. Next year, in -4419 IC, the High Elf princes gathered at the Glade of Eternity to choose their new Phoenix King at the First Council. Malekith, who was Aenarion's son, an experienced warrior, a mighty wizard and a successful general, was the obvious choice.[3a][4a][5a][6a][12a]

However, it was then revealed that Aenarion's children by his first wife, who had been believed slain by Warrior of Chaos, were in fact alive. Yvraine would become the new Everqueen. This created a huge problem for Malekith's ambitions as the Everqueen (his own half-sister) and the future Phoenix King would have to conceive a daughter. The Council of Princes believed Malekith was too much like his father (he was short-tempered and preferred to resolve disputes with violence); they also feared the influence Morathi wielded over her son, as she had wielded it over Aenarion, and wished to restrict it. [3a]

Believing that such a war-like ruler was unsuitable to rule in a time of peace, the council elected Bel Shanaar, Prince of Tiranoc instead. On the surface, Malekith took the decision well;[6a][12a] he even silenced the public outcry from his mother and his homeland. Instead, he declared that he would strike out on his own, winning glories and wealth for all of Ulthuan. At the least, he would make the Elven Empire greater and more powerful than it had ever been; at best, he would prove his worth as the future Phoenix King, in any age, beyond all doubt. [3a][12a]

Both Morathi and Malekith attended the ceremony on the Island of the Flame where Bel Shanaar passed through the Sacred Flame although they had not attended his ceremonial marriage to Yvraine. [3b]

Conquests and travels

In -4164 IC (the 255th year of Bel Shanaar's reign) Malekith departed Nagarythe with a mighty fleet and army, setting sail to Elthin Arvan.[3c] He discovered the city of Athel Toralien under siege by Orcs and saved it once its remaining citizens had pledged their allegiance to him - their own prince, Aneron having fled with most of the garrison. [3c] Conscious of the growing popularity of Prince, Bel Shanaar confirmed Malekith's claim and that any ruler who deserted their people left their domains suitable for reconquest by another prince. [6a][3d]

Malekith traveled far and wide in search of greater power and glory, establishing colonies across the Old World in the lands that would become the Empire and Bretonnia, fighting great battles against Orcs and Goblins, Beastmen and the followers of Chaos, as well as establishing friendship and trade links between the High Elves and the Dwarfs. [6a][7a][12a]

Malekith split his time between Athel Toralien and Karaz-a-Karak as the High King, Snorri Whitebeard and Malekith became close friends, with the Elf Prince pledging undying support and exchanging priceless gifts when they met for the last time. [3d][6a][7a][12a] Bel-Shanaar sent him a white Dragon of Caledor as a gift for his many achievements although it was later slain by a mutated Giant. [3d]

Campaigning in the Saraeluii mountains, Snorri and Malekith encountered a small human tribe and decided that they would watch the young race as they showed potential. For over 1200 years, Malekith ruled and expanded the colonies but he was unhappy when Bel Shanaar announced that he would come to meet the High King - his mother having sent word that Ulthuan was increasingly luxurious but the Phoenix King was not popular. [3e]

Malekith was insulted in -2839 IC when Bel Shanaar came first to Tor Elessi and used the greater part of his army, 200,000 strong, to line the road when the Phoenix King came to Athel Toralien in late summer. Malekith was further enraged when Bel Shanaar named him as mere Ambassador to the Dwarfs, the representative of his empire. [6a][3e]

Another fifty years passed with Morathi informing him of the plotting against her and that the court were suspicious of the historic links Nagarythe had with Khaine. The Prince was however concerned at the rumours he was hearing of sinister cults and sects dedicated to pleasure which soon began to seep into his own cities. [3e]

Whilst in Karak Kadrin, Malekith was told that the High King was dying and wanted to see him before he died - the Prince immediately rode for Karaz-a-Karak arriving in time to spend the next three days standing vigil over his old friend. Before he died, Snorri commanded that Malekith swear an oath: Swear it to me on my own grave, on my spirit, that you shall remain true to the ideals we have both striven for these many years. And know this, that there is nothing so foul in the world as an oath-breaker. Malekith agreed and so swore. [3e]

Pausing only to name Snorri's son, Throndik as the new High King, as his father had wished, Malekith then spent some time staring at the empty throne, feeling that Snorri had taken the last days of glory to his grave. The next decade saw the Prince distance himself from all the Elves, even his companions until finally he proclaimed he would sail north with a picked force of 500 unmarried veterans, likely never to return. Whilst he was away, he named Alandrian as his regent. [3e]

Before he could depart, Morathi arrived with a small fleet including the first of the Dragonships, Indraugnir which she gifted to him. She told him to go north, learn of both Chaos and humans but then return to save Ulthuan from the tide of blood and fire she had forseen. Although she denied plotting she had entered into discussions with many princes and had confirmed there was no need to marry Yvraine.... She also brought many priests and priestesses to the colonies, despite his known disdain for them and was not convinced when he told her I will not rule with falsehood. One day we will be free of the gods and better for it. [3f]

He traveled home aboard the great ship, first stopping at the Blighted Isle and he went ashore and was tempted by the Sword of Khaine but managed to resist, retreating to his ship and immediately heading north, transferring his mother to a merchant vessel to take her home. [3g]

In -2789 IC Malekith now led his expedition northwards into the Chaos Wastes itself, mapping the coastline at first but finding this an impossible task due to the shifting ice and its nearness to the Realm of Chaos. They fought many human champions of Chaos over the next fifteen years as Malekith sought some great glory to replace that which he had lost.[3h] It was here that he discovered Vorshgar, an ancient city in the ice, and within it a powerful artifact - the Circlet of Iron. [6a][12a]

The dead city was formed of buildings of many varying shapes and sizes, the walls meeting at strange angles, oddly formed empty doorways and windows and stairs which changed in height at every step. Short pathways widened as they were traversed but avenues that apparently were miles long took only moments to walk. Malekith was forced to use his magic to avoid them being lost and trapped within buildings. [3i]

Within one ziggurat they found a plateau with seven enthroned skeletons, itself surrounded by lines of unmoving cloaked skeleton sentries, armed with sword and shield - although humanoid, they were the height of a Dwarf, short torsoed and long limbed with the thick bones of a human. Malekith took the circlet from one of the enthroned and the skeletons attacked. [3i]

Whilst the conflict began, Malekith saw the whole world from above and the Winds of Magic sweeping across it and he realised that he must be ready to meet the threat of Chaos, and with the power of the Circlet he alone was in a position to confront and defeat it. He returned the skeletons to their slumber with a thought. [3j]

Return to Ulthuan

After many centuries away from home, Malekith eventually returned to Ulthuan in -2774 IC, only to find his homeland on the brink of civil war. The Cult of Pleasure, a dark sect devoted to the Cytharai, the darker Elven gods had begun to take hold of Ulthuan's society.[6a][12a] At the court of the Phoenix King, Malekith volunteered to lead investigations into the cult's activities as no other prince could or would do so, many received his offer with relief with even Imirk of Caledor agreeing not to oppose his appointment. [3k]

Malekith led a substantial army consisting of 600 of his own knights, 300 chariots of Tiranoc, 700 Reaver knights from Ellyrion as well as 10,000 spearmen from Eataine and Yvresse with a large baggage train of sleek wagons which carried supplies as well as priests and priestesses. For the first time in 1300 years, Malekith set foot in his homeland, telling Carathril that ...from my lands, from the realm forged from the blood of my father, has grown a dark canker that poisons the heart of Ulthuan. That is a shame I cannot bear, and I will expunge it. [3l]

He was informed by Elthyrion, a Raven Herald, that a huge number of cultists had left Anlec and made a lair in the old fortress of Ealith.[3m] Knowing of a secret sally port, he took a small select group of riders - Reavers and Nagarythe Knights - to use it and infiltrate the castle. [3n] This they did and stormed through the castle interior, slaughtering cultists as they moved and crushing all resistance. Finally he was confronted by a High Priestess and the prince was shocked when her magic overcame his - even whilst wearing the Circlet of Iron. She revealed herself as his mother and chided him that he was weak and no true heir to his father - in response, he ordered his men to kill her. A brutal fight ensued between her coven and his warriors and Morathi was forced to use her magic to flee before Malekith could cut her down with Avanuir.[3o]

As he considered his mothers betrayal, he also acknowledged to himself that her plan to use the Cults had been effective - Elthyrion brought further news that Nagarythe had risen to support Morathi. Malekith was forced to retreat, first to Thirech where he defeated an army of cultists with ease and then to the port town of Galthyr where his fleet was based. The town had been also attacked but had held under its ruler, Prince Durinne. The fleet moved to Athel Reinin and from there Malekith returned to Bel Shanaar, swearing to the despised ruler that with his support he would defeat Morathi by marching on Anlec itself. [3o]

As he mustered his forces over the winter, Malekith received disturbing reports from Athel Toralien about not only the rise of cults in the colonies but also rising incursions by Orcs and so are able to only send a small force to reinforce him. Only a few princes of his homeland stayed loyal to Malekith including House Anar. He made sure to keep on good terms with Prince Haradrin of Eataine who had the most powerful fleet of the elves whilst he observed the enemy with his magic. [3p]

He asked Bel Shanaar to move his army to the border of Nagarythe, which the legions of that nation moved to counter and at the same time sent a fleet towards Galthyr. Those Raven Heralds loyal to him also caused havoc and confusion whilst Malekith moved his own army in small companies into the mountains of Ellyrion, supported by Prince Finudel. The attacked through the Dragon Pass and then marched on Anlec itself resulting in the First Siege of Anlec. [3p]

Malekith successfully captured both the city and Morathi herself, although he had been on the verge of killing her outright. She pledged to turn the cults to his own purposes and would submit to being humbled before all of Ulthuan, knowing that in time she would be raised back to her true station. Malekith agreed but warned her that should she betray him, he would kill her without a second thought, to which she replied: You have proven that to me. That is why I am so proud of you. [3q]

His army marched to relieve Galthyr but even as the various Naggarothi commanders swore new oaths of loyalty to him, the cultists fled into the wilderness. Escorted by the Sapherian wizards, Morathi was taken to Tor Anroc and the great palace of the Bel Shanaar, where she remained under house arrest. [3q] Many elves lost their lives in the great purges Malekith led (many of whom were his political enemies). In truth, Malekith was in league with the Cult; Morathi was the cult's high priestess, and was using it to destabilise Ulthuan and raise an army for the next stage of his plan.[6a][12a]

The authority of Prince Malekith seemed to have challenged after his warriors arrested Eoloran Anar who they claimed had become a worshiper of Atharti. His homeland soon descended into anarchy and civil war and to the horror of many cultists struck at the various princes across Ulthuan, Malekith retreated from Anlec with several thousand troops to the home of Bel Shanaar. He persuaded the Phoenix King to convene a council of princes at the Shrine of Asuryan to choose a leader who would prosecute the war against the cults. [3r]

Before they would set sail to the Ise of Flame, Malekith met with the Phoenix King and was enraged when he told him that he was going to choose Prince Imrik to lead the campaign. Still furious he visited his mother who told him to enact her prepared plan to kill Bel Shanaar through the king's chamberlain, Palthrain. [3s]

Attempted coup

Malekith is burned by the Sacred Flame of Asuryan

After many years of plotting, Malekith made his move. in -2751 IC he poisoned and murdered Bel Shanaar in secret, claimed the Phoenix King had been part of the Cult of Pleasure and had committed suicide in shame.[3s] Malekith called the ruling Princes to the Shrine of Asuryan and demanded the crown pass to him, but they were skeptical. Realising they would not give it willingly, Malekith tried to take the crown by force; In Massacre at the Shrine of Asuryan he and his followers slaughtered most of the princes in the temple. However, as he tried to walk through the Eternal Flame as his father had done, it began to consume him and he was terribly burned. His followers fled back to Anlec with their master's body, where Morathi nursed him back to health. [4a][6a][12a]

Thus began a long civil war, later known as

The Sundering

With the aid of sorcerers and Hotek, a renegade priest of Vaul, he forged a mighty suit of armour to protect his withered and burnt body with the Circlet of Iron mounted on its helm. The uncanny metal armour was then fused to his own body.[6a][12a]

Now known as the Witch King, he renewed his war against the new Phoenix King, Caledor I. [6a][12a] Malekith deployed an army of conscripts from Tiranoc at the Battle of Eagle Pass against Caledor I,[1a] unconcerned with his defeat, using it more to assess his enemy. Morathi paraded his elite new army for him following the battle where he told her he would next attack Chrace and kill Alith Anar and his Shadow Warriors when they inevitably tried to attack his army on the march. [1b]

He launched his campaign into Chrace but experienced considerable resistance from the Chracians who fought many small actions against elements of his army but never gathered in large numbers. At the same time, Alith Anar and his forces conducted a successful guerilla campaigns against the Druchii supply lines and as Malekith continued on towards Tor Archae he received word from Morathi that Caledor was besieging Tor Anroc. Conscious that Morathi could react emotionally and concerned that even if he took Tor Archae, it would be very hard to hold, re reluctantly gave the order for his army to march back towards Tor Anroc, but by way of Ellyrion. [1c]

Malekith arrived in Tiranoc to find Tor Anroc empty with Caledor having retreated to his fleet and sailed for Chrace. The Witch King then spent time improving the fortifications of the city, Morathi joining him in the autumn with a cavalcade of a thousand elves that he refused entry into the settlement - to her annoyance. She demanded he invade Caledor itself, but he refused citing the risk that more dragons would awaken to aid their enemies - rather he determined that they would seek to kill the Phoenix King and see the alliance of the kingdoms collapse. [1d]

Over the next few years, the two armies marched back and forth but although no decisive battle was fought, many towns were burnt and sacked. Malekith sent assassins to kill his rival, the first attempt taking place in Saphery where the Phoenix King was resting with Prince Koradrel and although Caledor survived thanks to Thyriol, Koradrel was killed. [1e]

His finest army was defeated in the marshes at the Battle of Maledor [6a][12a] and he fled to Anlec, but now had barely enough soldiers to even man the walls of the city. He told the gathered sorcerers including Auderion, Morathi, Drutheira, Illeanith and Urathion that they would use their magics to disrupt the Great Vortex and summon an army of Daemons.[1f]

When even Morathi questioned what would happen if the could not harness and control the Vortex he replied If Ulthuan will not be mine, then none will rule. I would rather our people perished than see them laid low by the hand of another. Better it is to see the world torn asunder than suffer this eternal torment. [1f]

In -2723 IC He attempted to unbind the Great Vortex and unleash the powers of Chaos to destroy Ulthuan. This attempt failed after Urathion's betrayal warned the mages of Saphery, but still devastated much of northern Ulthuan by a vast tidal wave.[4a][6a][12a]

Naggaroth

So Malekith and his followers were driven out of Ulthuan, making their way to the cold wastes of Naggaroth on the newly created Black Arks. There they settled and erected their black cities, including the capital Naggarond. The Dark Elves have, to this day, continued to fight, determined to see Malekith restored to what he sees as his rightful throne and the High Elves exterminated or enslaved for their perfidy.[4a][6c][12a]

Invasions

For over 5000 years, Malekith has waged war against the High Elves, seeking to reclaim the throne he considers his own. The history of the Dark Elves is the history of their iron-fisted king himself. [4b][12a]

In -2005 IC Malekith orchestrated Great Betrayal: the fracture between the friendship between High Elves and the Dwarf Kingdoms: Dark Elf agents dressed as High Elves attacked Dwarf traders and settlements. Neither stubborn and proud side failed to see the deception and the War of the Beard began. Over the centuries Elf colonies of the Old World were razed. As Caledor II departed to oversee the war, Malekith in turn returned to Ulthuan and rebuilt his Anlec in -1599 IC, [6c][12a]

This led to a long war, that only ended in failure: in -696 IC Phoenix King Tethlis the Slayer finally destroyes Anlec and drives the Dark Elves from Ulthuan.[6c][12a]

In -693 IC the Battle of the Waves was fought at the Blighted Isle with the Dark Elf armada forced to return to Naggaroth but at least Tethlis died mysteriously.

After a High Elf expedition to Naggaroth is butchered, the Dark Elves again invaded Ulthuan in 1125 IC, conquering the Shadowlands and rebuilding Anlec once more. This time it survived until 1502 IC when it was razed by the dragon Nightfang who mourned his slain rider General Mentheus. [6c][12a]

Great Chaos Incursion

In 2301 IC Morathi seduced great numbers of northern Chaos barbarians. Together with this horde Malekith invaded Ulthuan once more, until he was defeated by Tyrion, Teclis and the Everqueen Alarielle at the Battle of Finuval Plain. As the high elves began to be overwhelmed, Teclis invoked the goddess Lileath for one last attack on the Witch King who was forced to fling himself into the Realm of Chaos or be destroyed by the huge bolt of energy.[6d][12a]

End Times

As the beginning of the End Times he returned from three months sojourn in unknown parts and prepared to renew the assault on Ulthuan when word came to him that Naggarond itself was under attack by Valkia the Bloody and her Bloodied Horde. He relieved the siege and then ordered all Naggarothi forces bound for Ulthuan to return home to defend their homeland.[9a]

At the swiftly convened council, he expressed his anger and frustration declaring that Ulthuan would wait until the barbarians had been suitably humbled. Malus Darkblade was dispatched to return Morathi to him, unharmed.[9a] The battle against the Bloodied Horde went badly, even after Malekith defeated Valkia with the cities of Clar Karond, Karond Kar and Har Ganeth all being laid waste to.[14a]

With Naggarond relatively safe, the Witch King led his army towards Ghrond to find out why his mother had not sent warnings about the invasion. Even getting there was not easy and he lost a third of his warriors before they reached the tower - finding that it was surrounded by a vast forest of huge black thorns. A single sorceress, Drusala emerged to greet them and declared that Morathi was now an avatar of Hekarti and as such she would speak to the witch King alone. Malekith dismounted from Seraphon and followed the sorcress into the maze.[14a]

He was recieved in the audience chamber - taking his mothers bloodrock throne when she did not appear immediately. When she did, he noted that she had not given any warning of the invasion but also that cared little for what had been lost: Our folk had fallen into weakness and squalor. We had grown fat and lazy, a herd of dull-witted beasts no longer fit for the great destiny I shall provide. Now the herd has been thinned, the weak slaughtered by the northlanders’ axes. I have you to thank for that, though I am sure you did not intend matters to unfold thus. Those who remain are warriors and survivors all. They will be my army, and Ulthuan’s ruin, for they will survive only through seizing the land that is theirs by right. The throne of the Ten Kingdoms will at last be mine.[14a]

Morathi was unconvinced and disdained his offer to set her up as the Queen of Ulthuan once more - saying she prefered to become a goddess but he taunted her that she was pinning after Tyrion. When asked what she forsaw if he went to Ulthuan she told him that he would loose everything - even his name would be lost to him and she would rather see him dead. He left her in the tower, stating he would not kill her but she could rot in her tower.[14a]

When he departed, all of his army where greatly suprised to see him in a good mood and equally suprised when the garrison of the tower joined his forces along with Drusala. They returned to Naggarond and Malekith summoned the surviving members of his Black Council and revealed his plan to them - most were enthusastic but some, such as Malus Darkblade did not hide their discontent. He ordered the remaining settlements burnt, the slaves slaughtered and all Druchii to board the fleet - only those fighting for Hellebron in the ruins of Har Ganeth remained.[14a]

Battle for the Isle of the Dead

Mount

During the war of the Sundering, Malekith rode into battle either on the Black Chariot pulled by a pair of Cold Ones [4b] or the black dragon Sulekh[1b] until she was killed at the Battle of Maledor.[1]

After another dragon, Kaliphon had been slain with a lance through its heart, Malekith drove a chariot pulled by a pair of Cold Ones into battle. During that time he ordered all other battle chariots in Naggaroth to be destroyed, so that he owned the only remaining one. A clutch of more than a dozen Dragon eggs were discovered in the Spiteful Peaks and tended by priestesses of Khaine for almost a century. Seraphon was the first to emerge when they hatched, destroying a number of the other eggs. Impressed by the Dragons instincts, Malekith assigned Rakarth to train his new mount for decades and his most favoured generals were given their own Dragon to master. [13]

Malekith flew with his new flight of Dragons and their riders to Ulthuan to test its might against a small coastal town, wiping it out. [13]

During the End Times, Malekith rode a mighty black dragon called Seraphon into battle.[2a]

Weapons, Armour and Equipment

During the wars of conquest and the Sundering, Malekith wielded the sword Avanuir.[1b][3] Later he wielded the sword Urithain the Destroyer.[2b] During the battle for the Blighted Isle, Urithain was shattered by Tyrion wielding Sunfang.[2c] The shards of Urithain were reforged by Hotek and renamed Asuryath.[2d] Malekith wielded Asuryath in the battle for the Isle of the Dead where Asuryath too was shattered by Tyrion wielding the Sword of Khaine.[2e]

  • Armour of Midnight:: Created using meteoric iron mined in Naggaroth, it does not effect Malekiths casting ability and is virtually invulnerable to non magical attacks. [5a]
  • Circlet of Iron: Older than the Elvish race, it boost the magical reserves of Malekith. [4b]
  • Destroyer: Enables Malekith to steal a foes magical power. [4b]
  • Hand of Khaine: Powerful magical gauntlet that can crush skulls and tear off limbs. [5a]
  • Spell Shield: Dispells spells and uses the energy to attack the caster. [4b]
  • Witch King's Armour: Forged from iron and resplendent with Runes, it does not effect Malekiths casting ability and makes him harder to hit. [4b]
