History
It took place in -4419 IC, a year after Aenarion's death. [1][2]
Thyriol claimed that messengers had been sent to Anlec to consult with Morathi, Malekith and the princes of Nagarythe in advance of the council but they were turned away. [1]
Council
Morathi began the discussion warning that the threat from the forces of Chaos was not gone and that although peace now is a thing of memory, her son should rule and lead the elves to explore the world. Menieth countered that although he would follow no other king in times of war, Malekith was not one to bring civilisation to the rest of the world. Arguments continued until Morathi finally asked who felt worthy enough to take up the crown of the Phoenix King.[1]
Save for Menieth none present could meet her gaze but then the ruling prince of Tiranoc Bel Shanaar arrived, proclaiming that he had been chosen. He was accompanied by Oakheart and when challenged confirmed that he had been chosen by the Everqueen herself - Morathi countering that Astarielle was dead and there was no more Everqueen! [1]
Yvraine now came forth, her identity confirmed by Oakheart and the Treeman continued, stating that her brother too had been saved by their mother's sacrifice but he had sailed from Ulthuan, seeking neither dominion or fealty. She stated that she could not marry her half-brother and would instead take Bel Shanaar as husband and Phoenix King causing Morathi to erupt with anger - only to be calmed by her son.[1]
Malekith confirmed that he would surrender himself to the judgement of the princes with many initially swayed by his well spoken words. They debated beneath the trees of Avelorn, some reminding their peers of the prophecy of Caledor that the line of Aenarion was touched by Khaine but others remained moved by the entreaty of the young prince. Finally Thyriol announced their decision. [1]
Although Morathi was again enraged, Malekith crossed the glade and went down on one knee before the chosen ruler. He was however, sorely disappointed and returned home with his mother, not attending the marriage of Yvraine and Bel Shanaar although they both would witness the passing of Bel Shanaar through the flame of Asuryan. [1]
Participants
- Elves of the East and the South.[1]
- Yvraine, daughter of Astarielle and Aenarion. [1]
- Oakheart, A Treeman guardian of the sacred shrines of Avelorn. [1]
Quotes
We have made our decision. While Malekith is a fine prince, he is yet young and has much to learn about the world, as do we all. Now is a time for wisdom and guidance, not iron will, and for those reasons we remain committed to the investiture of Bel Shanaar.
