History

During the reign of King Charles VII of Bretonnia, the Duke of Carcassonne was an aggressive and ambitious lord, one who sought to extend his domain. He conquered the lands between the Vaults and the River Brienne but this was not enough. His powerful neighbour, the Duke of Quenelles was beyond challenge and so Machevort turned his attention to the realm of the Wood Elves. [1a]

He was not foolish enough to enter the forest itself but the Wild Heath that surrounded it, a vast area of plains and scrub seemed much more accessible. One winter, Machevort dispatched settlers to chop down the trees in this area whilst his less than virteous knights kept the Glade Riders at bay, having strict orders not to enter the forest proper. [1a]

The frustrated border guards dispatched word to Herion, 5th ruler of the Kindred of Beeches who mustered his kindred but Ariel and Orion still slumbered deeply as did the Forest Spirits. Knowing that they would have to face the Bretonnians on the open field, Heiron choose the muddy plains of Elfincourt. [1a]

Duke Machevort was delighted to hear that the Elves were mustering an army to fight him and looked forward to crushing them and making his holds secure. In addition to his own barons, knights and retainers, he hired a large number of Tilean Mercenaries and marched to Elfincourt. [1a]

Finally he faced the Elves across the muddy field, conscious that his knights were arrogant and impetuous and that he faced some of the finest archers in the world. [1a]
