Supreme Patriarch
From Warhammer - The Old World - Lexicanum
The Supreme Patriarch is the overall leader of the Colleges of Magic located in Altdorf. He holds a considerable amount of political influence in The Empire, where he is an extremely important authority in all matters dealing with magic. The current Supreme Patriarch is Balthasar Gelt, who recently defeated Thyrus Gormann, the previous patriarch.
This position is decided through a ritual duel held once every eight years[1][2a] between any challenger and the incumbent Patriarch. The winner of this duel receives the Staff of Volans as a badge of office[3][1][2a][2b]. The staff was made by Frederick von Tarnus for the first Supreme Patriarch Volans.

Notes
- Warhammer Armies: The Empire (4th Edition)[3] and Realms of Sorcery (1st Edition) [4a] states that the duel is held every seven years, rather than eight, however, this information was superseded by the 6th[1] and 7th[2a] Edition army books.
