History

As the war raged across Ulthuan, Prince Dorien of Caledor led the army of the Phoenix King into Avelorn to face a Druchii army, sending his fellow princes on their Dragons to aid Chrace. He had been met on the border by the captain of the Maiden Guard Althinelle who with her sister warriors had guided him for several days through the forest, although she had warned them not to leave the trail that they had laid. [1]

When he expressed the concern that his army was not suited to fighting beneath the canopy of trees, Althinelle told him that a battleground would be prepared for him where his archers would have clear fields of fire and his knights even ground on which to charge. As she had promised, they emerged into a vast glade into which a battered army of Naggarothi soldiers were also emerging, harassed by clouds of arrows from the trees. [1]

Battle

As the Naggarothi deployed formed a line of spearmen and repeater crossbows with several hundred knights in the centre as a formidable reserve. However even as they did so, the trees behind them moved closer until they were no more than two hundred paces away, cutting off any chance of retreat. Dorien's army moved to engage with the Druchii knights moving to confront the Caledorian cavalry led by Dorien as arrows and crossbow bolts flew across the clearing. [1]

The melee between the two groups of knights nearly resulted in Dorien's death but he was saved from death by one of his Silver Helms and both sides broke away to reform whilst the infantry engaged. A druchii sorcerer blasted the Caledorian spearmen but as the Silver Helms faced a new charge the magic of Avelorn engulfed the enemy knights with a massive eruption of thorns, killing many. [1]

From the treeline emerged a number of Treemen, Forest Spirits and Spites accompanied by wolves, bears and flocks of hawks, owls and smaller birds which engulfed the crossbowmen. The forces of the forest then combined with the Silver Helms to crush the last resistance of the Naggarothi. [1]

Aftermath

Yvraine, the Everqueen spoke to Dorien through her captain and told him that his brother should not delay too long before coming to Avelorn to ritually wed her. As the forest began to consume the Durchiit dead, she further told him to take his dead and head to Cothique via Chrace to meet with the Phoenix King. [1]
