As the Empire was torn apart by civil war in the Time of the Three Emperors, Vlad von Carstein mustered his own army in Sylvania but encountered the army of the Elector Count of Middenheim just inside his borders. [1a]
As they fought amongst the dark woods, cairns and ruins, the Middenheim army proved quicker and more adaptable and Vlad himself was slain by the Knights of the White Wolf. [1a]
It would be a full year before the Vampire Lord arose again. [1a]
