History
After Orghotts Daemonspew, Bloab Rotspawned and Morbidex Twicebornmade landfall from the Vulfbite via the Gulf of Kislev near Erengrad they headed south-west, aiming to reach Talabheim via the Ostland forests. Although it was assumed they would receive some forces from Brass Keep, assailing one of the best defended cities of the Empire was a formidable challenge but one Orghotts hoped would prove himself of being worthy of Daemonhood.[1a]
He and his small warband rode through the Middle Mountains in the early autumn of 2525 IC moving fast towards their target. On reaching the fortified crater, they simply waited till night fell and rode their monstrous mounts up the wall and tore through the few defenders in the area before moving towards the city proper.[1a]
Entire regiments of State troopers moved to prevent them but initially at least they were swiftly brushed aside but as time passed and engagements continued, flesh wounds began to accumulate. Fire and barricade now blocked them and the Nurglings that rose in their wake were cut down by missile fire. Orghotts ordered a retreat under heavy fire, falling back all the way to the forest that surrounded the crater. However there they found much needed reinforcements as a procession of plague daemons arrived to join them - the Maggot King Epidemius at their head.[1a]
The Tallyman then put his own plan into operation, having a vast pyre built outside the walls whose smoke formed a giant thunderhead. It in turn unleashed a storm of infected blood and pus on Talabheim whose streets began to fill with the unclean yellow-white liquid. With the population panicking and trying to flee, the military leaders of the city decided to advance on the creatures causing the deluge.[1a]
Battle
A thousand veteran soldiers formed the vanguard of the cities army including several artillery batteries from the walls. Almost immediately, the mortals were surrounded by vast host of cyclopean warriors who were welcoming the rain of foulness that was still raining down.[1d]
At the head of the tide of Daemons were the trio of Maggoth riders and as they charged towards the defenders, the humans locked shield and spear in place to repel them. Some of the attackers burst and vanished leaving behind only a vile smell but most absorbed the blows and thrust with their rubbery flesh.[1d]
Reben Geiss shouldered his way to the front of the wavering battleline, his sword wreathed in violet fire which dispelled any Daemon it cut or stabbed. The first hour of the battle saw a tenth of the host of Epidemius banished back to the Realm of Chaos as the missile troops on the walls supported their fellow state troops.[1d]
They were in turn engaged by rot flies and plagued drones, risking cannon fire to fight them.[1d] Splattered with the remnants of the flying daemons, the Miragliano ploughed forward blasting an arm off Trippletongue with its cannon but it quickly began to regenerate. The magic and blades of the three maggoth riders could not be resisted and as they slaughtered, Nurglings arose in their wake.[1e]
Even Adric Greenwood, now transformed into a Manticore was no match for them and soon fell to the trio. Epidemius dealt with the steam tank, ordering a nurgling to wedge its hefy buttocks in the cannon. Attempting to fire on and destroy another beast of Nurgle, the tank instead blew itself to pieces. One piece of shrapnel found the neck of Geiss and the battle was over.[1e]
The few survivors joined the refugees fleeing the city and heading for Altdorf.[1e]
